MNfashion presents The Shows: Emma Berg & Samantha Rei

@ Grain Belt Bottling House
79 13th Avenue NE
Minneapolis

7:30 pm show (6:30 pm doors / All ages / $15 standing and $25 seated in advance, $25 standing and $35 seated at the door

Do you think you can handle day three of The Shows? Well you better because this night features two prominent local female designers, Emma Berg and Samantha Rei. Rei brings her distinctive style to the stage with all her classic influences. We are talking a mix of Lolita, Japanese youth, fairy tales and historical fashion. She makes one of a kind couture pieces, that are lively. It is like watching a wonderland come to life. On the other side of the scale is Emma Berg. Using a slight political undertone she has created an almost all black, grey and white collection with a heavier silhouette, but with light fabrics. The visual heaviness contrasts with the flowing fabrics creating a manifestation of the current political situation. Two different looks from two different women. Who wouldn’t want to get trapped in a wonderland? Or add some more black to their closet, you can never have enough. BONUS: Preview the new video featuring Berg’s Fall 2012 collection that will screen before the shows tonight below. -Alexandra Katz

Mission of Burma w/ Porcupine

@ 400 Bar
400 Cedar Avenue
Minneapolis

9 pm (8 pm doors) / 21+ / $20

Mission of Burma were one of those bands from the early ’80s that flared bright and burned out quickly – one seminal album, an EP, a
live record, and not much else. Their reformation in the early ’00s was viewed as a righteous fluke, and now they’ve been together for almost ten years (and four records), making their second act longer and more fruitful than their first. If you don’t know Mission of Burma, check out Signals, Calls and Marches, their ’81 masterpiece – it’s technically “punk,” I guess, but at the tail end of the first wave, the very moment it began to morph into the far more angular and brainy post-punk. Note also the use of tape loops and early sampling – they were pioneers in this arena, and almost never recognized as such. They were hugely influential to the next gen of bands (including REM, Sonic Youth and christ knows how many others) – don’t miss ‘em this go ’round. -Jon Hunt

Henry Rollins: The Capitalism Tour

@ Fitzgerald Theater
10 E Exchange Street
St. Paul

8 pm show, 7 pm doors / All ages / $25

Maybe you know the great audacious Mr. Rollins from his punkdom days as the growling frontman of hardcore band Black Flag. Or perhaps you know Rollins as the dude who made spoken word “cool” and “manly.” Perhaps your love for the brawny punkateer started nearly 30 years back during his roles opposite Lydia Lunch in Richard Kern’s weird-ass short films – The Right Side of My Brain, anyone? Whatever the root of your original cognizance, nowadays you should know Rollins as an outspoken human rights activist, his sharp-witted anecdotes on capitalism and wry observations about the American democratic process. Tonight, don’t miss as Rollins’ 50-state-capital-tour takes him to the Fitzgerald for one hilarious evening packed with poignancy, political punches and ballsy commentary delivered in Rollins’ signature uber-defiant style. -Juleana Enright

“We the Designers: Reframing Political Issues in the Obama Era”

@ McNeal Hall Gallery at Goldstein Museum of Design
241 McNeal Hall
1985 Buford
St. Paul

During gallery hours / FREE

Anyone who has recently had a political conversation with someone from (let’s politely call it) ‘the other side of the aisle’ realizes we have lost a shared language that allows us to speak about the issues on a level playing field. Acknowledging the void of mutually agreed on vernacular in the political realm, the U’ of M’s College of Design presents We the Designers, asking if design has the power to help unite citizens on the issues. It’s an intriguing concept, and considering the increasingly designed nature of our interface with the world around us, and the ubiquity of political ads and polarized rhetoric, a powerful one. This program invites thirty one practicing graphic designers to discuss, posit and analyze the issues surrounding the pressing political issues facing the country, in an effort to explore possible methods of persuasion to unite rather than divide. It’s sure to be a compelling exhibit that will give you plenty to ponder this election season. -Anthony Enright

Thanks to UTKU Fashion and the Mexican Consulate we are getting a glimpse into the stylish side of Mexico. Dirty Three w/ Cairo Gang

@ Cedar Cultural Center
416 Cedar Avenue S
Minneapolis

8 pm show (7 pm doors) / All ages / $18 advance, $20 at the door

Dirty Three are a wildly experimental, frequently thrilling instrumental trio who toe the line between rock and jazz in a far more
aggressive way than the first gen of fusion artists. Violinist Warren Ellis, for example, has been associated with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, if that gives you an indication of how this stuff is pitched – dark, winding, a little menacing, and frequently pretty. Their latest, Toward the Low Sun, is full of intriguing moments, including the gorgeous “Moon On The Land” and the frantic, powerful, guitar-heavy “That Was Was.” Word is the group is astonishing live (they’re Nick Cave’s live face) and have to be seen to be believed. Openers Cairo gang traffic in idiosyncratic folk-based stuff, and are probably best known for backing up Bonny “Prince” Billy on the lovely The Wonder Show of the World. -Jon Hunt

Squad19 Presents: FUEL 2012

@ Cult Status Gallery
2913 Harriet Avenue South
Minneapolis

Squad19, a coalition of rockin’ print artists, raises awareness for this issue each year with FUEL, a fundraising art event. Each artist will be showing pieces inspired by their favorite foods, whether that’s lima beans or paste. (Probably not paste.) All of the proceeds from print sales will be donated to Second Harvest Heartland, so when you purchase your print, you won’t just be supporting lima beans, you’ll be supporting an organization devoted to providing the compassionate aid that so many people in the Twin Cities desperately need. The Soviettes w/ Dan Vapid and the Cheats + The Gateway District + The Strait A’s

@ Triple Rock Social Club
629 Cedar Avenue
Minneapolis

9 pm / 18+ / $8 advance, $10 at the door

If you were into the local music scene, oh, say, six or seven years ago, you undoubtedly remember the feisty pop-punk stylings of girl-fueled group the Soviettes. One of the best local bands to grace the scene in recent years (in our humble opinion), the Soviettes made a quick but memorable imprint on Minneapolis with their catchy anthems and sassy punk rock swagger. The recently reunited band will be playing with the Gateway District, which features the Soviettes’ own Maren Macosko, Dan Vapid and the Cheats, and the Strait A’s. We’re crossing our fingers that this reunion isn’t just a one time thing, and that we’ll be privy to new Soviettes material in the near future. Please? -Staff

Lil B

@ The Cabooze
917 Cedar Avenue
Minneapolis

7 pm show (6 pm doors) / All ages / $21 advance, $25 at the door

It doesn’t take a record deal, a VMA or a TV appearance to make a hip hop star anymore. In the wake of come-out-of-nowhere acts with no major label backing like the Weeknd and the advent of the free, downloadable “mixtape,” it’s clear that the Internet has changed the game completely. Case in point: Lil B, aka “the BasedGod,” a 22-year-old, meme-generating rapper who has over 400,000 Twitter followers, over 60 million YouTube views, who’s one of the biggest up-and-comers in the rap game – purely thanks to the Internet. He’s making his debut Twin Cities appearance with this headlining set at the Cabooze, and his followers can only say: “Thank you, Based God.” Opening are the also-popular-on-the-Internet, Minneapolis-based DJ crew WAK LYF. -Jahna Peloquin

Evan and Ellie’s Wedding Party feat. Buffalo Moon + Red Daughters + Littlefoot + Larry Wish

@ Turf Club
1601 University Avenue W
St. Paul

9 pm / 21+ / FREE

We don’t know Evan and Ellie, but it’s pretty dang cool of them to invite everyone in the whole dang town to their wedding party. The super-sweet lineup includes Buffalo Moon, whose take on samba-psych is filled with skittering rhythms and a wicked sense of humor that recalls Stereolab and Os Mutantes. Red Daughters play a kind of aggressive mashup of skittering indie pop and the soundtrack to the best Western movie you’ve ever seen. Their songs are absolutely laden with organ and guitar angularity, not a million miles from where Kings of Leon probably should have ended up if they hadn’t gone horribly wrong, with a bit of rural Band-isms thrown in for good measure. Larry Wish is an odd, impenetrable “outsider pop” act on the Moon Glyph label, droney and dissonant as it is melodic. Littlefoot is the solo project from vocalist and musician Elizabeth “Beth Ann” McDowell, whose unique style of electronic indie pop, topped with breezy, beautiful vocals, is both other-wordly and super accessible. -Staff

Thee Oh Sees w/ Ty Segall + Trin Tran + DJ Baby Penis (SOLD OUT)

@ Turf Club
1601 University Avenue W
St. Paul

8 pm doors / 21+ / $12 advance, $14 doors

A night of awesomely fucked-up psychedelia at the Turf Club. Headliners Thee Oh Sees play that particular breed of echo-drenched,
garage-influenced psych music that perfectly combines your favorite Nuggets band with the lysergic histrionics of Syd Barrett-era Floyd and a touch o’ the Cramps thrown in for good measure. Their last, the brilliantly surreal “Putrifiers II,” is by turns furious and fuzzy and madly stomping. Opener Ty Segall is right in that same pocket with a hint more folk influence – think a ragged, dirtier Ultimate Spinach, with a little less goofiness and a little more pound, or a touch of mid-period Love. Dig “My Head Explodes” off his latest, “Goodbye Bread,” for a good example of what you’re in for. A night of deeply fuzzy psych, just like you like it. -Jon Hunt

Huun Huur Tu

@ Cedar Cultural Center
416 Cedar Avenue S
Minneapolis

7:30 pm (u pm doors) / All ages / $25 in advance, $30 at the door

For as long as humans have been singing, voices have served as de-facto instrumentation to produce a plethora of sounds and beats are truly astounding in their variety (those beatbox kids get me every time). Certain cultures have long traditions of vocal acrobatics that produce sounds you may be surprised can emanate from the human body. The Tuvan (a Russian provence near Mongolia) quartet Huun Huur Tu respect the throat singing traditions of their herdsman ancestors while embracing modern compositions and rhythms for a unique and celebrated style of music that you will honestly ever hear elsewhere. The basics of throat singing is that the singer produces both the tone and overtone simultaneously to create multiple notes that overlap within a single voice. When these voices are combined in a group and accompanied with strings, the results are eerie, hypnotic and meditative. The group has collaborated with Franz Zappa, The Chieftans, postmodern composers, and electronic musicians, so far from being a historic relic, they are an example of how vibrant traditions can be celebrated and innovated into the modern world. -Anthony Enright

It’s gorgeous, notch, and her latest, Silencio, reads like a gentler, less guitar-driven ‘Lab record, featuring yet more fantastic songwriting/singing and some tremendously icy grooves for you to sink your teeth into. It’s perhaps less melody/hook based than the best ‘Lab records, but still a completely thrilling/meaty listen for fans of avant-French-pop. Depending on her band, you can probably expect some awesome live stuff – the ‘Lab were always a blast to see in that setting, too, and Sadier, though not a dynamic performer, is just a great singer, full stop. -Jon Hunt
