We’re in the heart of summer – 90 degree days, non-stop sun, and the great outdoors. But that hasn’t stopped Twin Cities creatives from doing what they do best. This weekend, hit up any number of fantastic art exhibitions from local favorites Michael Gaughan, Deuce 7 and Garrett Perry – plus Parisian import Alejandro Komori. In another nod to gay Paree, Minneapolis hosts three Bastille Day celebrations in honor of France’s own independence day over the weekend. Célébrons!

“Domaine de la Sensation: New Works by Alejandro Komoi”
@ Fox Tax Gallery
503 1st Avenue NE
Minneapolis
Opening reception 6-10 pm, runs through August 3 / FREE
Alejandro Komori is an amalgam of cultures. The Parisian artist infuses his work with elements of his Japanese and Mexican heritage, while weaving in techniques from his classical training in Western Europe. The result is a crossroads of cultures, most recently enriched by his experiences over the last month in Minneapolis, where he has been training under Algerian painter Freddy Munoz. This limited-time exhibit captures the artist’s rare ability to fuse culture and beauty. -Beth Hammarlund

“Medium of Exchange: The Art of Cash” Panel Discussion
@ Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts
6666 E River Road
Fridley
Discussion 7-9 pm, runs through August 18 / FREE
Local artist John Schuerman has curated a show about the root of all evil: the Kardashians. Wait, we mean money. Provocative local artists Alexa Horochowski, Caitlin Karolczak, Eric Lunde, Karen Searle, David Bartley, John Ilg, Rachel Breen, Beth Parkhill, Rob McBroom and Pete Driessen were given free rein to interpret both conceptual and literal ideas about money, finance and cash. With the recent upheavals in both the world financial markets and in the finances of most Americans, the time seems ripe for an interesting artistic dialogue on the liberations and constrictions of having (and lacking) money. The artists, through painting, drawing, installation, print-making, photography and sculpture toy with both the material nature of the forms that currency takes (cash, cards, checks, ATMs) and with the emotional cultural and spiritual implications of exchanging this artificial notion for real world goods and services. Fortunately for all, the event is free so it won’t cost you a penny to view and participate in a rich dialogue about the meaning of that stuff that lives in your wallet. Join the artists today for a provocative discussion about money, art and commerce with artists, curator, and special guests. -Anthony Enright

“We Exist: Influences of Graffiti on Art, People & Culture”
@ Intermedia Arts
2822 Lyndale Avenue S
Minneapolis
Opening reception 6-9 pm, runs through August 30 / FREE
Graffiti art (or “street” art if you find that term pejorative) is far from a new phenomenon, in the past three decades it’s become so ingrained in the art world and popular culture that the distinction between “fine” art and graffiti has all but disappeared. While the artistic influence of street art has risen sharply in most circles, the whiff of outsider status has lingered even as the medium has found success in the mainstream art world. We Exist presents a broad based examination of street and graffiti art with an emphasis on the direct cultural and personal effect of this art form. In addition to showcasing local, regional and national graffiti/street artists who work in art and design, the exhibit also looks at traditional fine artists that incorporate the visual aesthetic of street art into their work. The nearly 3 dozen artists represented in the show range from instantly recognizable international artists (i.e., Shepard Fairey) to middle school students. Curator Peyton Scott Russell has devoted nearly 30 years to promoting and practicing street art and certainly has the pulse of how the medium has evolved and where it’s headed in the future. This is a not to be missed show for anyone with even a passing interest in street art. -Anthony Enright

@ Burnet Art Gallery at Le Méridien Chambers
901 Hennepin Avenue
Minneapolis
Opening reception 6–9 pm, runs through September 9 / FREE
Local artist/performer Michael Gaughan is a one-man extravaganza – literally, the guy can do anything. With a resume that includes rocking out in bands Brother and Sister, ICE ROD and Little Dog on Top of Big Dog, to organizing an city-wide musical scavenger hunt and producing a steady stream of gorgeously detailed illustrations and paintings, he could easily be called one of Minneapolis’ most charming creative masters. In his latest solo exhibition, “Buck Turbo,” Gaughan tackles “visual stand-up comedy” through a series of vivid, parody and pastiche-ridden watercolors that pair the unexpected for cheekily funny results. -Juleana Enright

Sisson’s work intentionally takes on ideas of paradox and instability within the very striking abstractions. -Anthony Enright

2011–2012 McKnight Visual Artists Fellowship Exhibition
@ MCAD Gallery
2501 Stevens Avenue S
Minneapolis
Opening reception 6:30-8:30 pm, runs through August 17 / FREE
Each year, the prestigious McKnight Artist Fellowship Program bestows generous cash awards to outstanding Minnesota artist at the height of their careers. For the 2011/12 year, four visual artists received this honor; their work will be shown and discussed this weekend at the MCAD Gallery. The accomplished range of work could not be more varied. Environmental artist Christine Baeumler has created a bog ecosystem green roof that both celebrates and challenges traditional notions of green design and sustainability. Liz Miller’s “Imperios Decorum” is a stunning 26-foot vertical structure that will be viewable from multiple gallery levels that references the visual language of costume, pageantry and weaponry. Behavioral artist Marcus Young literally exposes his personal life through I’m looking for love, so let’s fix the system, an ongoing purge of his possessions via Craigslist accompanied by publicly displayed personal ads. Artist Elizabeth Simonson plays with complex symmetrical and asymmetrical forms by filling the four story light well of the gallery with numerous pod-like units of wire and beads whose shapes and patterns are based on forms found in sacred geometry. The exhibit is the result of a year-long residency that included both mentorship and critical feedback, so you’re certain to see highly developed work from four very talented artists. -Anthony Enright

Empty’s Tapes presents Cadette + Stephen Paul Smoker + The Funeral and the Twilight
@ Hell’s Kitchen
80 S 9th Street
Minneapolis
10 pm / 21+ / $5
Chicago’s Stephen Paul Smoker (it’s a they, not a he) just released their excellent debut LP, Ripe Fruit. We hear hints of a million cool things, including Pink Floyd (the early stuff, not the later stuff), the Church, Berlin-era David Bowie, Brian Jonestown – the list goes on. It’s uneven, almost willfully ragged in places, but there’s a hushed beauty that occasionally rises to a deeply psychedelic roar. Local headliners Cadette sound like the cool garage-punk-girl-group that needs to appear in a Tarantino film, stat, while fellow locals the Funeral and the Twilight traffic in a dark, intense, echo-laden goth – dare I call it goth? – mixed with a touch of Morricone-esque western film soundtrack
for extra dark intensity. -Jon Hunt

“Growing Up is a Drag: New Works by Garrett Perry”
@ HAUS Salon
4240 Nicollet Avenue S
Minneapolis
Opening reception 7:30-10 pm, runs through October 6 / FREE
Artist Garrett Perry’s intensely colorful hybrid painting/drawings have a dissolute quality that implies they’ve been subtly melted, damaged or otherwise harmed in some way. Somehow this seems appropriate given that the theme of his focused new show at HAUS salon is “Growing Up is a Drag.” Isn’t our adult identity the collective sum of our physical, emotional and intellectual injuries and experiences, with us each left nursing the wounds, scars and patches? Yet each day we wake up, do something to make ourselves presentable to the world, try our best to hide the repairs and tamp down our fear and anxiety to a level that allows us to function in the adult world. (Okay, that was dark some days aren’t that bad, right?) Perry’s recent work gives explicit form to his neurosis and trepidation about growing up while exploring ideas about nostalgia, fantasy and identity. With subtle references to pop culture and art history, the artist gives us images on the edge of recognition that nevertheless still invite interpretation. You can come and escape the monotony of your adult life at Saturday’s opening reception, curated by mplsart.org‘s Emma Berg, which will also feature a cocktail party celebrating the HAUS salon team’s nomination as national “Team of the Year” at the 2012 North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA). We guess there is one benefit to growing up – you get to drink cocktails while you contemplate your advancing age! -Anthony Enright

The Blind Shake w/ The Mallard + Is/Is
@ Turf Club
1601 University Avenue
St. Paul
9 pm doors / 21+ / $8
Headliners the Blind Shake traffic in the kind of stomping garage-punk that used to make the Mighty Mofos local contenders – tons of drum throb, head-whipping tempos, Dick-Dale-twang guitars and beautifully shouted vocals. Their first LP, Seriousness, could have come equally from 1961, 1981 or last year. Openers the Mallard (from San Francisco) play a similarly timeless garage-pop — ragged, cave-stomp stuff with delightfully ragged vocals. And Is/Is are coming off an excellent LP
release (III, reviewed in our very pages) and play an intensely dark brand of psychedelia that should blow the minds of some of the straight-up punkers attending. -Jon Hunt

The baby boomers are growing old, and so are the major studios. As one causes havoc, debt, and frustration, why not celebrate the other? Centennial graphics are decorating the latest Universal releases, and Paramount is also getting its due with a program running this month at the Heights Theater. The gilded big mountain studio is presenting restored 35mm prints direct from the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress. This Sunday has a silent double feature of iconic visages: W.C. Fields in Gregory LaCava’s So’s Your Old Man, in which Fields plays a struggling and suicidal glazier who changes his fortune by rescuing a princess. Following is another entrepreneurial
comedy, Laurel and Hardy in Big Business (not to be confused with the 1988 Bette Midler/Lily Tomlin vehicle) about two Christmas tree salesmen who bring destruction, and laughs, with them. Both films will feature a live organ score on the Heights Wurlitzer. -Niles Schwartz

Demographics Album Release w/ Grant Cutler, Baby Boys + Gentle Lovers DJs
@ Kitty Cat Klub
315 14th Avenue SE
Minneapolis
9 pm / 21+ / $5
We loved Demographics’ latest LP, If Ever (reviewed in We Will Rock You HERE). It’s a hushed, restrained record full of great melodies and tremendous charms. We called it a country record where everybody showed up with synths instead of twangy guitars, and that’s halfway there. They’ve got great songs, a neatly sad mood and fantastic vocals. Opener Grant Cutler, of course, is one half of the sadly defunct Lookbook as well as one half of R&B slangin’ DJ duo Gentle Lovers. It sounds like the first half of the show is All Cutler, All The Time, which alone is reason to show up. Also playing are surf-pop trio Baby Boys, also more than worth a listen. -Jon Hunt
