Emperor X w/ Party of One / Patches & Gretchen

@ Echo Arts Gallery
275 4th Street E, Suite B200
St. Paul

8 pm / All ages / $7 suggested donation

A former high school science teacher, C. R. Matheny ditched his pursuit of a master’s degree in physics to focus on a slew of self-released, critically-acclaimed lo-fi speed folk albums. The songwriter/noise pop saboteur’s project, Emperor X, has been dubbed “a swollen interfusion of capricious brilliance” and hailed alongside acoustic indie pop artists like Modest Mouse, Black Dice and The Microphones. When not performing his one-man-band anarcho-electric anthematic singalong sets, Emperor X employs the help of a revolving rooster of friends adding drone-y guitars, marimbas, brass instruments and percussion to his modest delay pedal/battery amp set-up. Recently, Matheny has garnered attention from NPR by burying master tapes at geocache coordinates across the globe in conjunction with his album series + “geocaching art project,” The Blythe Archives. Tonight, don’t miss special local guests veteran indie rockers, Party of One and backporch punk poet-band Patches and Gretchen as they share a stage with the jangle punk sounds of Emperor X. If only Bill Nye could have been this cool. -Juleana Enright

Modern Radio Night: Littlefoot / Colin Gorman Weiland / DJ MAKR / DJ Neil Weir

@ Kitty Cat Klub
315 14th Avenue SE
Minneapolis

9 pm (bands done by midnight) / 21+ / FREE

First Thursdays are local record label Modern Radio’s night at the Kitty Cat Klub. Now in its 13th year, the label curates a night of music featuring not only members of their label but other eclectic Twin Cities musicians, and is always a diverse treat for any fan or participant of the music scene, as well as a good opportunity to see this artist flex their music muscle in different genres and sounds. This month’s installment features Littlefoot, a one-woman electronic dream-pop project by Elizabeth McDowell; her covers are a particular highlight, like her reimagining of “Zombie” by the Cranberries. Also playing is Colin Gorman Weiland (Daughters of the Sun, Camden) with his electronic blip noise project and DJs Neil Weir, MAKR (AKA Mark McGee) and Modern Radio’s own Tom Loftus, who are sure to spin some interesting tunes before and after bands – and maybe even a dance party. -Danielle Morris

Gentle Lovers Present: Freakin’ with Friends

@ Nomad World Pub
501 Cedar Avenue S
Minneapolis

Equally a reference to their real-life couple status and a tongue-in-cheek nod to the cheesier side of R&B, DJ duo Gentle Lovers (Grant Cutler and Allegra Oxborough)’ sultry jams always get things heated on the dance floor. With their monthly residency at Clubhouse Jäger having ended, they’re moving the party to the Nomad for four hot, hot nights in May. They’ll be joined by special guests each night, kicking off with guest sets from DJs Ander Other (AKA Doomtree’s super-intern), Option Two and Connie Hawkins to help keep things bumpin n’ grindin’ all night long. -Jahna Peloquin

“Messages From the Event Horizon”: New Work by Alison Hiltner

@ Gallery 122 at Hang-It
122 8th Street SE
Minneapolis

Opening reception 7-10 pm, runs through June 16 / FREE

Artist Alison Hiltner is fascinated by nature, both what is and what could be. In that, she is not unlike many of the great scientific and literary and visual creators of the past few centuries. After all, the line between science and science fiction is less a firm boundary and more a blurry fuzz on the horizon of the imagination. Hiltner’s work exudes a sense of wonder about the world by creating images and artifacts that at first appear utterly alien but slowly resolve into recognizable forms. Her artifacts and environments remind the viewer how fantastic and diverse the structures and places we take for granted (the human body, the ocean or forest floor, outer space) really are when magnified or shown out of context. Amazingly, the artist uses the humblest of materials to achieve these startling results, candle wax, packing foam and even Q-tips have all recently been transformed in her hands. Come find out what extraordinary creations the artist has cooked up for this show, but be forewarned, you may leave looking at everything around you a little bit differently. -Anthony Enright

FRIDAY, MAY 4TH

“4real”

@ Rosalux Gallery
1400 Van Buren Street NE
Minneapolis

Opening reception 7–10 pm, runs through May 15 / FREE

Rosalux Gallery hosts an exhibition of work by four young artists who have recently joined Rosalux in their gallery assistant program. Nate Burbeck, Chloe Briggs, Brent Erickson, and Jennica Kruse produce art from very different aesthetic perspectives, but share an optimistic approach to their roles in the local arts community. Brubeck and Briggs are both painters though Brubeck’s paintings are subtly surreal landscapes while Briggs’ focus is intense portraiture. Brent Erickson employs drawing and printmaking to create ‘conversation surrogates’ representing the flow of information between people. Jessica Kruse uses an interest in architecture and history to inform layered work which reinterprets personal photos from her past. These four young artists present refreshingly mature work both technically and thematically, adding up to a strong exhibit that is definitely worth a look. -Anthony Enright

FRIDAY, MAY 3-SUNDAY, MAY 5

“Steampunk Delusions”

@ Open Eye Figure Theatre
506 E 24th Street
Minneapolis

7 pm nightly, continues May 10-12 / $15 adults, $12 students/seniors/Fringe button (cash or check only)

Hardcover Theater presents a double feature of fantastic sci-fi fantasy for the stage at Open Eye Figure Theater. The Diamond Lens is first on the bill, telling the tale of a young man who enlists the help of supernatural forces to create the most powerful microscope in the world. Then he promptly becomes enamored with the tiny world he discovers beneath the lens. Next, English Scrimshaw Theatrical Novelties presents To Mars With Tesla, a silent comedy in which Tesla and Edison match wits and battle for ultimate supremacy on the surface of Mars. And, knowing what we do of these rival inventors, you can bet that Tesla invented the means to travel there. Then Edison stole, patented and sold it for wheelbarrows full of pound notes, or crowns sterling, or whatever it was people used for money in those days. Veteran thesbians and l’étoile favorites Dawn Krosnowski (MacBeth, The Video Game Remix), Tim Uren (The Curse of Yig), phillip andrew bennett low (Camelot is Crumbling), Kelvin Hatle (Death Perception) and Joshua Scrimshaw (He’s Joshua Scrimshaw) join the two shows’ talented casts whose collective CV reads like a Fringe Festival aficionado’s bucket list. -Rob Callahan Read Rob Callahan’s review here.

Ice Rod Chat Roulette Tour Kickoff

@ Turf Club
1601 University Avenue
St. Paul

10 pm / 21+ / $6

It’s another not-to-be-missed night at the Turf Club when Michel Gaughn and his alter ego Ice Rod return for another night of Chat Roulette before he takes the show to the road. Part comedy, part performance art and part rap show, this event is 100% fun! The concept is simple: Ice Rod sets up dorm room onstage (complete with Pulp Fiction and babe posters), and turns on the webcam and freestyle raps to the people on the computer. The unsuspecting person on the other side of the web cam usually thinks that they are getting a private rap session, but little do they know they’re being projected on a big screen for the whole room to see. Hilarity ensues, especially when the chat partner gets the camera turned around and sees what’s really going on. Prog-meets-Miami Vice rockers Moonstone Continuum open. -Danielle Morris

Retribution Gospel Choir w/ The Farewell Circuit / Erik Koskinen

@ Triple Rock Social Club
629 Cedar Avenue
Minneapolis

8 pm doors / 18+ / $12

True confession: I like Al Sparkhawk’s riffy, cheeseball, muscular AOR alter ego way more than his hushed, muted regular self in his better-known outfit Low. Their The Revolution EP was their corniest yet, and I loved it – it had just enough chunky Foreigner-isms to go ’round, and so many hooks you could hang an entire coat factory on ‘em. Best part: you’d never expect someone who plays shows you can’t even talk during to come off this rockin’, and do it so convincingly. Openers the Farewell Circuit are far mellower and far indie-er, with great drum-driven songs and magnificent singing. And Erik Koskinen’s honky-tonkish singer-songwriter vibe is twangy as hell, all attitude and swivel. -Jon Hunt

Tortoise + Minneapolis Jazz All-Stars

@ Walker Art Center’s McGuire Theater
1750 Hennepin Avenue
Minneapolis

8 pm / All ages / $22

Tortoise’s music is impossible to adequately classify. Instrumental? Post-rock? Synth-pop? Ambient? None of those descriptors really sum up the group, whose deliriously catchy, occasionally cheesy, always fascinating instrumentals sound like the soundtrack to a really messed-up sci-fi film from the late 80s, all burbling synths and sleepy ambient dance beats. For this special one-off performance, they’re collaborating with the Minneapolis Jazz All-Stars for a performance featuring a “remarkable shared musical vision” – our guess is a lot of fascinating, percussive improv and overall great head music. -Jon Hunt

FRIDAY, MAY 4TH

Mother of Fire w/ Food Pyramid / Leisure Birds / Anthony Janas

@ Palmer’s Bar
500 Cedar Avenue
Minneapolis

10 pm / 21+ / $5

This lineup at Palmer’s, the diviest of dive bars, is an absolute who’s who of Minneapolis buzz bands. Mother of Fire play seriously messed-up, droney, percussive psychedelic music – the songs from their latest, Feral Children, drill deep into your skull with amazing violin parts that recall John Cale at his most Stockhausen-y, and deep alto female vocals that add a sense of palpable menace. Openers Food Pyramid are fresh off a reportedly great appearance at SXSW – their propulsive, instrumental electronic music recalls a way more burbling, way more interesting, retro-influenced Tortoise. Leisure Birds are equal parts Brit-psych and U.S. dark-rock, the kind of insidiously catchy, trippy stuff you can’t help but love. Don’t know much about Anthony Janas, who apparently hails from Chicago and plays a synth, but considering how great the other stuff tonight is, you can just about figure he’s probably great too. -Jon Hunt

@ Bryant-Lake Bowl
810 W Lake Street
Minneapolis

7 pm / $10-$15

Cut from the same voyeuristic cloth as the rest of us, local choreographers Dustin Maxwell and Jessica Briggs love people watching. However, their latest collaborative movement experiment, Remote Reflection, goes beyond simply plopping a bench-side seat at MOA and having a gander by presenting the audience with a unique exploration in human observation akin to being on drugs – sans the trippy side effects. Prepare for a powerful paradoxical stream of conscious performance that drifts between the patterns of disconnection and connection and showcases intense aberrant imagery, bizarro events and visually striking movements. -Juleana Enright

@ 331 Club
331 13th Avenue NE
Minneapolis

10:30 pm / 21+ / FREE

We have it on good authority that there are exactly two types of people in this town: There are those who dress up in costumes and party for days on end at the big sci-fi conventions, and there are those who wish they could. The former already know what they’re doing, but those of you among the latter looked like you could use a push in the right direction. So, here it is. On Saturday night, bring the spirit of the con to the 331 Club and get ready for an all night cosplay blowout. DJs Slowmoe and Hey There Handsome provide the music, and the bar provides an assortment of standard Terran taps and drinks to keep you dancing the robot all night long. (Sorry, no Romulan ale.) If the weather’s warm, look for dudes dressed as Zardoz grinding with Vampirellas. If it’s more more of a scarf night, come as the Doctor. Or a yeti. Or the Doctor fighting a yeti. Yes. That. -Rob Callahan

“thisisdisappearing”

@ 2930 Newton Avenue N
Minneapolis

Noon-4 pm / FREE

Artist Lauren Herzak-Bauman has developed a unique site-specific installation project in collaboration with the Minnesota State Arts Board and the City of Minneapolis. Using a foreclosed and condemned home as a canvas, Herzak-Bauman and a rotating cast of artists-in-residence are creating a strange and poignant rumination on life, loss, decay, and the meaning of home in these post-recession times. In the empty and boarded house, the artists will use a variety of media and techniques including painting, installation art, photography and performance to express their own reactions to the setting. May 5th’s opening reception will allow visitors to watch the artists actively creating within and around the structure. Some examples of the work you can expect to see are artist MC Hyland documenting traces of the house’s past in a series of limited edition letterpress books, Ash Marlene Hane creating a digital mural of a lost love one using techniques that represent the swell and fade of memories over time, and Erin Hael presenting a performance piece (in one of the former bedrooms) where participants share a kiss. This creative and resonant art project builds to a closing ceremony on May 26th after which the house will be demolished, so it’s a real experiment in wistful transience. -Anthony Enright

The HUGE PUNY Show: A Multimedia Mash-up de Mayo

@ HUGE Theater
3037 Lyndale Avenue S
Minneapolis

10:30 pm / $5

Blending stand-up comedy, animation, improvisation and video, this monthly show produced by Minneapolis-based animation agency PUNY Entertainment takes on a Cinco de Mayo theme this month – well, not really. The so-called Cinco de Mayo edition features acts that have absolutely nothing to do with Cinco de Mayo because, as PUNY puts it, “Latin people have had their culture co-opted enough.” Fair enough. The lineup includes Twin Cities stand-up comic Mike Brody, the official event comedian of the SyFy Channel’s Ghost Hunters; the intrepid improvisors of The Explorer’s Club, a group of adverturers that regale the audience with their exploits of un-PC, revisionist history via an improv comedy/Manifest Destiny mash-up. Finally, from the animators of PUNY comes the premiere of “Wanna Know How I Made This Dress?,” a new animated short from L.A.-based writer/performer Katie Crown. -Jahna Peloquin

The Melismatics “Postmodern Rock” Reissue Release & 10-Year Anniversary w/ BNLX / The Japhies / Mayda

Amsterdam Bar and Hall
6 W 6th Street
St. Paul

9 pm / 21+ / $8 in advance, $10 at door

Tonight power-pop band the Melismatics celebrate the re-release of their fantastic, shockingly-ten-years-old first album, Postmodern Rock. It’s a fitting tribute to a band we’ve always thought should be bigger than they are – Ryan Smith writes phenomenally catchy pop songs and God knows Pony is a remarkable, electric frontperson and bassist. Meanwhile, BNLX have just released the best of their series of EPs, the remarkable 7 (reviewed in last week’s We Will Rock You). The Japhies play intense, Detroit-influenced, whipass rock – imagine a faster, uglier, more controlled Stooges singing songs about sex. And Mayda is basically everything you loved about Prince channeled into a tiny, amazing woman with one of the best singing voices in town. -Jon Hunt

@ Kitty Cat Klub

Minneapolis

9 pm / 21+ / $5

Cinco de Mayo is always a great excuse to party, and this show has a great line up to do just that. While the bill may not exactly have Latin flair, it will provide a great soundtrack to drinking tequila with friends and getting wild. Indie pop duo Fort Wilson Riot is back from months on the road and will surely be high energy and ready to party with their hard-to-generalize sound, which features great boy-girl harmonies, crashing guitars, dance-ready electronic drums, and synthy grooves. Also playing is UMAMI, whose psychedelic, drugged out rhythms will be sure to get everyone dancing. The last band of the night Sexcat, saved for last when the crowd is lubed up and ready to lose all control to their pure pop sex kitten beats. Geosafari opens. -Danielle Morris

5 Years of Too Much Love

@ First Avenue
701 First Avenue N
Minneapolis

10 pm / 18+ / $3 admission

Downtown’s notorious Saturday night party Too Much love celebrates its five year anniversary this weekend at First Avenue. It’s hard for us to believe we’ve been getting down at the same spot with resident DJ and TML mastermind Soviet Panda every week for half a decade – but at the same time, it’s hard to imagine a time when the Mainroom was dance-free (and it certainly was – February 2006 marked the end of First Avenue’s previous Saturday dance night, Downtown Danceteria). For the matrimonious affair, Sovietpanda will be joined by DJ Dustin Zahn, a local and worldwide favorite who has dropped everything from Objekt in the warehouse to Theo Parrish on the rooftop. Something tells us this won’t be the last anniversary to be had by this mainstay in the Minneapolis club/dance culture. BONUS: get your night started right and get there early to enjoy 2-4-1s until midnight. -Staff

Devotio Moderna: The Return

@ Porter & Frye
Hotel Ivy
201 S 11th Street
Minneapolis

DJ Bach’s Devotio Moderna night started a couple of years ago with a great concept – a laidback, sophisticated night in a loungey location with sleek R&B tunes and a themed absinthe drink. After a couple of stops-and-stars – originally at Chambers’ courtyard – the night seems to have finally found a permanent home at Porter & Frye in the luxurious Hotel Ivy in downtown Minneapolis. Expect Bach and guest DJs Gigamesh and Ricky Biggs to spin a sophisticated, sexy mix of everything from old Kanye to new R&B faves The Weeknd and The Dream. The crowd, too, is sure to be sophisticated and sexy, a far cry from the city’s plethorous 18-plus, rave-tastic dance nights. Enjoy $3 taps, $4 premium rails, $5 select wines, a $5 appetizer menu, half-off select bottles of wine and “Devotio Moderna”‘s signature absinthe cocktails. -Jahna Peloquin

3400 15th Avenue S
Minneapolis

1 pm parade, 3 pm festival / FREE

Where R.E.M. left off with a quizzical melancholy, this year’s MayDay theme picks up and presents an uplifting alternative – yes, it’s the end of the world as we know it, but also “the beginning as we live it.” Even when the weather is cold and icky (i.e., last year), it’s impossible to be anything but jovial and galvanized by the array of culture and the embrace of acceptance celebrated by our local community on May Day. To feast your eyes on some über-impressive, DIY, large-scale puppetry, head to the corner of 25th Street East and Bloomington Avenue and follow the festivities south to Powderhorn Park for a day-long, park-spanned community fete. Enjoy delicious food from local vendors and pop-up trucks, as well as tons of awesome entertainment including Laughter Yoga sessions, dance and drum circles and live sets from MayDay regulars Savage Aural Hotbed and Positive Vibrations. It may not be the real end of the world, but it might just be the only time – outside of Burning Man – you’ll get to see a giant-human-powered crow walk down the street. -Juleana Enright
