Weekend What’s What 4/19-4/22

by admin

Let l’étoile plan your weekend! This weekend is so packed with art openings and live music that we can barely contain it. But we’re most excited about variety – variety shows, that is. Friday is Wade Boggs Wicked Boston Baked Bash at the Turf Club, a variety show featuring Marijuana Deathsquads, Har Mar Superstar and more. Then on Sunday, Bryant-Lake Bowl hosts “SENSATION,” a Jaime Carrera-curated variety show inspired by the classic ’80s TV show Solid Gold. You can also eat, drink and be merry at Friday’s Gastro Non Grata foodie-meets-rock ‘n roll variety show.

“Isohyet; Isopleth” & “Seven Billion”

@ Minneapolis Institute of Arts
MAEP Galleries
2400 3rd Avenue S
Minneapolis

7-9pm / FREE

The Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program (MAEP) hosts not one but two simultaneous opening receptions at the MIA this Thurdsay. “Ishoyet; Isopleth” is a collaborative installation by Minneapolis artists Katelyn Farstad and David Frohlich that explores what happens when different work styles are merged in a single exhibit. Referencing a meteorological term for lines drawn on a map to connect points that share similar data, the two artists interpret ideas about connected ideas, idle time and desperation through an intriguing body of work that ranges from paintings to digital constructs. Also opening is “Seven Billion,” the first of three planned collections by the painter and installation artist Gregory Fitz. Utilizing simple materials such as foam and chipboard, Fitz creates neon landscapes, paintings made to resemble Ansel Adams photographs, and cinder-block sculptures in a response to the aesthetic focus of modern art and architecture and the obsession with craft and presentation inherent in so much modern art. -Anthony Enright

A Night of Bad Art

@ ‬Walker Art Center
1750 Hennepin Avenue
Minneapolis‭

5-9pm‬ /‭ ‬FREE

Kids today. It’s always “subversive art” this and “challenge the status quo” that. We wish they’d stop reminding us just how much cooler they are than we were at their age. Unfortunately, that won’t be happening anytime soon, as the Walker Art Center Teen Arts Council (WACTAC) will be taking over the institution this Thursday to present A Night of Bad Art. Inspired by the king of poor taste, John Waters (who recently curated the Walker’s exhibition “Absentee Landlord”), the teen council has assembled a ragtag group of trouble-making artists, all locals between the ages of 14 and 21. There are rumblings of “mischievous play” and “unexpected visual interventions,” and the McGuire Theater will play host to a bawdy cabaret act. Come prepared, expect the unexpected, and support these rebels with a cause. -Beth Hammarlund

115 1st Street N
Minneapolis

Meet the cast (which includes beguiling Minneapolis ex-pat Hina Khan) and crew at the intimate party and try your luck at the raffle for prizes in over $1,000 in value from Honeycomb Salon, ID inside design, Intelligent Nutrients, martinpatrick3, and more, with proceeds going to fund the film. It’s an ultra fab way to support local film. RSVP to matt@deathtoprom.com to attend or donate to the film’s Kickstarter campaign at www.kickstarter.com. -Stefani Arden

CONTINUING DAILY

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival

@ St. Anthony Main Theater
115 SE Main Street
Minneapolis

Various times / $9-11 for individual films (multi-film passes available)

Springtime in Minnesota means two things. Basically two months of unpredictable bipolar weather, and a whole lotta films of a whole lotta shapes and sizes (from a whole lotta places) passing by St. Anthony Main’s beautiful Riverside, a lush place with a gorgeous downtown view that, in my life, is as cinematic as anything shown inside the Main’s classic theater. The frustration of film festivals is that so much of everything is a gamble, with an expansive list of short and feature films (280 this year) threatening to cancel each other out. It’s a box of chocolates where your best-guess purchases might land you with a handful of subpar fruit-filled pieces, or a bunch of delightfully nutty and succulent winners. Among your best bets this year are Bobcat Goldthwaite in attendance for his pitch-black comedy (and follow-up to the hilariously irreverent World’s Greatest Dad) God Bless America; The Extraordinary Voyage, about the restoration of Georges Melies’ A Trip to the Moon; The Dreileben Trilogy, a three-film thriller (from three different directors) in the manner of the Red Riding trilogy; King Curling, a comedy – about, um, curling – from Norway; I’m Carolyn Parker: The Good, the Mad, and the Beautiful, a Hurricane Katrina documentary by Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs); and a modern-day adaptation of Homer by avant-garde darling Guy Maddin, Keyhole. No. 8: A Benefit Art Auction for Midway Contemporary Art

@ ‬Aria at the Jeune Lune
105 N 1st Street
Minneapolis‭

7pm for VIP, 8pm for General Admission /‭ VIP Auction $125, General Admission $25

Midway Contemporary Art is constantly bringing national and international art to Minneapolis, and it’s time to thank them for everything that they do. In addition to stunning art exhibitions, Midway regularly hosts film events and artist talks. But perhaps most spectacularly, their art research library is free and open to the public. It’s rare that you can call something unique, but Midway absolutely qualifies. It is truly a one-of-a-kind institution. Expect plenty of amazing art to be available for auction, but don’t be deterred if you’re not a high roller. The evening is a great excuse to take in some fantastic art and mingle with fellow art patrons in the beautiful Jeune Lune theater. -Beth Hammarlund

“Pretty Hard: Flora Says Goodbye to Minneapolis”

@ Cult Status Gallery
2913 Harriet Avenue S
Minneapolis

7pm–1am / FREE

The bad news? We’re losing another one of our stellar local artists to Oakland. The good news? You’re invited to the going away bash! Tonight, join street artist Flora (AKA Martzia Thometz) for her first solo show that also doubles as her last show in Minneapolis. Her latest work tackles the issues of what traits are deemed “un-lady-like” in current culture and the pressures of being heard in a male-dominate scene. The Flora takes center stage, the show is rounded out by pieces by her street artist pals Ergot, Hbak, Oter, TCB, Biafra Inc and music by local punk rockers Night Crusade. -Juleana Enright

Gastro Non Grata: Pre-Earth Day Confection Carousel

@ Triple Rock Social Club
629 Cedar Avenue
Minneapolis

8:30pm doors, 9:30pm show / 21+ / $8 adv, $12 door

Your mother likely forced you to finish your vegetables before you ate dessert, but we have it on good authority that Mother Earth would never, ever be so cruel. The glorious mash-up of food and music that is Gastro Non Grata returns with a Pre-Earth Day celebration that’s sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. The Gastro folks are poaching three of the Twin Cities’ most talented pastry chefs for a “carousel” of delicious desserts. Dustan Pinlac of Levain, Christian Aldrich of Haute Dish and Michelle Gayer of Salty Tart Bakery (a recent James Beard nominee!) will be amping up your sugar high and teasing your taste buds with delectable treats. Music via honey voiced locals Cactus Blossoms, followed by the sweet sounds of Heavy Deeds and Michael Gaughan’s Little Dog on Top of a Big Dog. Lagunitas Brewery will be pairing each course with an accompanying brew, and it appears that some rare and exceptional kegs may be tapped (beer geeks line up now). As usual it’s not all for dessert lovers, the hallowed Dead Meat Door Prize is intact so you may take a big hunk of meat from Clancey’s Meat and Fish home. Gastro Non Grata’s events are a wonderfully unpretentious way to sample some of the city’s best food with cool music and a laid-back atmosphere, so come celebrate an early Earth day and taste the sweet bounty of spring! -Anthony Enright

Wade Boggs Wicked Boston Baked Bash

@ Turf Club
1601 University Avenue
9pm doors / 21+ / Cover TBD

Friday’s party at the Turf Club is a celebration of all things Boston, baseball, baked beans, and general awesomeness. This “variety show” features lots of Twin Cities favorites. Improvisational noisemakers Marijuana Deathsquads will present “the Boston Massacre,” with a no doubt slaying interpretation of the 1770 historical event. Artist, musician and sometime-rapper Michael Gaughan is performing as “Marty O’Brien, the messenger of violence within the Boston Irish Mafia” – whatever that means, it’s sure to be hilarious. Just in from L.A. is Har Mar Superstar, doing a Boston-themed karaoke set as his Boston doppelganger “Weird Boggs.” The party parallels between Har Mar and Boston baseball legend Wade Boggs are uncanny – Boggs was once rumored to have drank 60 to 70 beers in one sitting. If that wasn’t enough, surf-pop trio Baby Boys with be playing a 20-minute version of the Cheers theme song Leisure Bird and Gayng member Jake Luck helping out. There will be Boston-based trivia “with prizes,” and DJs Plain Old Bill, and Jonathan Ackerman will spin the Boston Beat down between sets; free jailhouse Bruins tattoos by P.O.S. (?!); clam chowder and Boston baked bean treats; Boston cream pie and Tea Party shot specials; and visuals by Playatta. This is sure to be the most raucous party of the spring, at least what we remember of it. -Danielle Morris

Off The Record Presents VIII: Ghostband, Enola Gay, Teenage Strangler

@ Hell’s Kitchen
80 S 9th Street
Minneapolis

10pm / 18+ / $5

Radio K’s Off The Record – showcasing bleeding-edge local music since the early ’90s – presents the eighth in a bi-monthly concert series at Hell’s Kitchen in downtown Minneapolis. The theme for tonight: messed-up noisetronica. Jon Davis’ Ghostband sounds like the unholy union of Sun Ra and Einsturzende Neubaten; his improvised sound collages, based around cut-up beats and found-sound samples, weave and dodge minimalistically, creating bleak but highly engaging soundscapes. Openers Enola Gay, while sporting the same love of cut ‘n paste samples, have a far more move-your-ass sensibility. Formed from the ashes of the Chelsea Boys, the band sports a dance-floor influence that comes from their love of big, colorful beats and electronic sound clusters. The sole guitar band of the evening, Teenage Strangler, sport a feedback-laden sound not a million miles off from early ’90s heroin-pop, the Venn Diagram criss-cross of Spacemen 3 and Sonic Youth. It looks to be a great night of experimental music. -Jon Hunt

Mother of Fire Release Party

@ Nicholas Edward Hall
(warehouse in back alley behind Joe’s Garage)
1610 Harmon Place
Minneapolis

9pm / $5

Okay, so “ritual swamp trance” might not be the most common of genres, but doesn’t it sound brilliant? Tonight, don’t miss the release party for Feral Children, the latest record from hard-and-heavy locals Mother of Fire. The trio’s hypnotic violin-bass-drums combo reminds us of early Sonic Youth, ’70s proto-metal-ers High Tide and a more experimental Rasputina. Catch sets from garage-stomp punk rockers the Blind Shake, Minneapolis guitar vet Paul Metzger, the Soaking Rasps (featuring Marcus Lunkenheimer of Skoal Kodiak) and tunes from DJ Soft Abuse. -Juleana Enright

“This Old Mouse”

@ Tarnish & Gold
349 13th Avenue NE
Minneapolis

6-10pm / FREE

The folks over at Tarnish & Gold have a new idea for that outdated laptop or clunky CPU that’s clogging up your storage unit; make it into art! Ok, maybe you shouldn’t make it into art, that sort of thing is likely best left to the professionals. (First, because yours is bound to look like a MST3K cast member; and second, because unintentionally releasing heavy metals = bad.) Working together with local electronic recycling company OceanTech, the gallery has invited artists to raid the company warehouse for raw materials and create work that illustrates the theme of artistic recycling and re-use. The exhibit setup is interactive with patrons invited to vote for their favorite piece. The popular favorite will be awarded with a (presumably new and functional) laptop. The event will also include education about the importance of electronics recycling and tips on proper procedures. We love the idea of using art and creativity to remind that the devices we use every day have both a working life and a larger life cycle, it’s a perfect Earth Day message in an entertaining package. -Anthony Enright

Ah, Record Store Day – that glorious 24-hour fest of vinyl nerdery embodied, when record labels bring out exclusive physical media to have and hold and for one day we pretend (gleefully) that iTunes and electronic media don’t exist, or at least matter a heck of a lot less than the joy of flipping through records and finding that beautifully rare slab. Hymie’s Vintage is throwing a gigantic block party, a kind of rock and roll circus with local artists and community groups, giveaways and 14 bands, including the Brian Just Band, Night Moves, Is/Is and the Goondas. @ CO Exhibitions

Minneapolis

7-10pm / FREE

Secondhand news tells us Minneapolis ex-pat artist Isaac Arvold’s turned his lemons into lemonade. Though his three-year body of work – two notebooks of illustrations made while on the road with Atmosphere – was stolen earlier this year, Arvold has transformed his recreations of these illustrations into 48 mixed media paintings, panels of which connect as murals – a metaphor for Arvold’s revisited, reconnected thoughts and reflections on his life that have been rebuilt piece by piece. Additional large-scale paintings and illustrations will also be featured in the exhibit, as well as select collaborations with performers, filmmakers, and other creatives. Following Saturday’s reception, the gallery will continue to display the murals through May 20 for Art-A-Whirl. -Meg Junkermeier

Dial-Up have a cool indie rock sensibility tempered by a love of slightly twee kraut-electronica — imagine Pavement + Cut Copy, maybe, with some absolutely great songwriting. The a-side of Landline, the band’s forthcoming LP (available to listen to on their Bandcamp page) is filled to bursting with killer hooks and great, skittering melodies, highlighted by “Metal,” which should be, in a perfect world, a gigantic hit on the Current. Openers Phantom Tails have a new video for their track “Young Rapture” making the rounds – and as ever, their blend of slightly sinister electronic pop greatly intrigues. Rounding out the lineup are Buffalo Moon, which sport some magnificent South American influences akin to an indie-rock version of Gilberto Gil. -Jon Hunt
